Skylar Simmons presents themes of momentum, the spectacle of change, and the void of time throughout her body of works.

Skylar Simmons is a fine arts painter based in central North Carolina. Her pictorial works, predominantly painting and printmaking, explore the conditioning we confront as we grace the thresholds of milestones through life. She is interested in how mixed media, found-object assemblage, texture, and layering can be used to address themes of choice and metamorphosis.

For many years, she has set a precedent of painting allegories of family interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal dissonance. Today her work questions the paradox of change, being and becoming, and experiences happening in simultaneous. There is a particular presence and focus in coding lived experiences with paintings acting as maps of an event or relationship, with live music shows and her recent marriage to a musician being especially influential to her work.

Each choice made about material, movement, color, representation and abstraction in the works reflects the considerations and negotiations of with histories we carry with us, and what we leave behind as we grow. While there are glimpses of representation throughout the pieces, these abstracted works act as capsules of time, gathered memories, and hopes forward.
