About

Skylar Simmons presents themes of momentum, the spectacle of change, and the void of time throughout her body of work.

With various mediums, Simmons expresses the biases of “spectacle,” using charcoal and graphite as touchstone materials to convey the temporal essence of rushed moments and experiences. The use of alcohol ink, and acrylic expresses the impact of permanence and reality. Cyanotype, typewriting, and site-specific lighting as mediums lend to memory, time, and the significance of perspective despite calculated processes.

Simmons’s works are often rich with intense contrasts in value and color. Some combinations are almost sickening, filling the eyes with overwhelming chroma. Palettes harken to RGB additive colors common to early digital spaces which providing a surreal experience in the tactile world.

Simmons' paintings often reflect allegories of interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal dissonance. The works pose questions about the paradox of change, being and becoming, and happening in simultaneous.

In her paintings, you can find silence against a raucous crowd, company in nothing, shift and change in stillness… persistence.
